No one Should Kill or Die for my Smartphone

Even though I have a fair amount of gadgets (MacBook Pro, G1 smartphone, Lumix camera, Flip, the list goes on…), I have not done a great job tracking the impact of buying and using them. Well, it’s time for me to make sure that my enjoyment of these things doesn’t cost other people their lives.

Taking Action in Support of People in Gaza

The attack of the flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza has brought attention to the crisis there. Some useful links:
Democracy Now has, as usual, great reporting, including interviews with people who were on the ship.
Avaaz has set up a page for people to sign a petition to the UN calling for an international investigation into [Read more...]

What Would My Mother Have Said About Birgit Hogefeld’s Clemency?

I was working away from home when I heard that Birgit Hogefeld had been denied clemency again via a Yahoo News story. It’s strange to me that it’s even news here in the U.S., since my brother Eddie was murdered by the Red Army Faction almost 25 years ago, but then I could see from [Read more...]

Reining in Oil Companies

I have a complex relationship with oil companies. On the one hand, I purchase their products and use them. I drive my car less than the average U.S.er, but still do drive, and I ride in planes, and sometimes in busses. But I also despise these corporations’ behavior. I want them to stop despoiling the environment, [Read more...]

Protect Oregon’s Air Quality and Family Farmers

Two groups I work with at my day job created action pages on Change.org today.
Oregon Toxics Alliance has an action page to tell DEQ to keep the ban on field burning that the 2009 Legislature passed. Their page explains the problems with field burning pretty well — these folks really know their stuff when it [Read more...]

I Almost Bought the Story of Stuff at Powell’s Last Night

What a treat to see Annie Leonard at Powell’s last night talking about the new The Story of Stuff book. Powell’s ran out of copies for sale, so I left empty-handed even though I was all set to buy it. I’ll have to trot down there later for a copy.
Leonard’s approach to engaging people on [Read more...]

The folks who brought you the 40-hour workweek…

I was pleased to see Larry Kleinman’s Op-Ed in the Statesman Journal this weekend, about how Oregon’s minimum wage is higher than the federal minimum wage, and he explains the role of Oregon’s unions in keeping us ahead of the feds. But, as Larry explains, the point here is that the unions don’t just wind [Read more...]

Another Portland-Iran Solidarity Rally Tuesday

Got this from Gabi’s blog: Local folks are calling for another vigil in solidarity with the people of Iran. This vigil will be Tuesday, June 23 at 7 PM in Pioneer Courthouse Square.
Thanks also, Gabi, for posting this LA Times article about the death of Neda Agha-Soltan, who was killed on the street in Tehran [Read more...]

Portland in Solidarity with People of Iran

I made it to the candlelight vigil in solidarity with the people of Iran at PSU last night. There were over 300 people there to show their support, and people observed a moment of silence for those who had been killed by “security forces” in Tehran. I got my “We are all Iranians” button and [Read more...]

Wow… Obama’s Address to the Muslim World

At times I can barely believe my eyes — is this really our President? I think it is! Here are a few select quotes, but I highly recommend reading the full transcript of President Obama’s address to a historic crowd at Cairo University.
First, some context for the relationship between the U.S. and the Muslim world:
